E955: Sucralose
Main role: sweetening
Also listed as: trichlorogalactosucrose
What is E955 (Sucralose)?
Sucralose is a high-intensity sweetener made by modifying sucrose. It provides sweetness at much smaller quantities than table sugar and may be combined with bulking ingredients or other sweeteners.
What does it do in food?
Its main role is sweetening. Sweeteners differ in intensity, bulk, and processing behavior. Intense sweeteners often need other ingredients to replace sugar’s volume. A sweetener declaration therefore does not tell you the complete carbohydrate or calorie content.

Label names and ingredient questions
Look for E955, E 955, or the ingredient name. Related names and label terms include trichlorogalactosucrose. A family code can cover more than one specified form; check the full declaration when the distinction matters.
EFSA's February 2026 review supports currently authorized uses but could not confirm a proposed extension involving prolonged high-temperature baking. Do not generalize that conclusion into a claim that every home frying or baking use is established as safe.
Is E955 safe?
EFSA confirmed the 15 mg/kg body weight/day intake limit for currently authorized uses in February 2026. EFSA sucralose update (2026).
A label identifies the ingredient but usually not its concentration. Calculating daily intake requires the amount in the food and the quantities eaten.
Authorization and conditions of use
The Great Britain food additive register lists E955 as Sucralose. This is an entry subject to its stated conditions, not unrestricted permission for every food. The record links to the applicable authorization terms. For an EU product, use the European Commission food additive database to check the relevant food category and limits. Other countries may use different names or rules.
