What is E422 (Glycerol)?

Glycerol is a three-carbon compound that attracts water. It is used to retain moisture, carry other ingredients, or influence texture; in some slush drinks it also helps manage freezing behavior.

What does it do in food?

Its main role is retaining moisture and providing bulk. These ingredients help manage moisture, volume, or texture. Replacing part of a recipe with a humectant or bulking ingredient can change several food properties, but the final nutrition values depend on the whole formulation.

Label names and ingredient questions

Look for E422, E 422, or the ingredient name. Related names and label terms include glycerin, glycerine, propane-1,2,3-triol. A family code can cover more than one specified form; check the full declaration when the distinction matters.

The UK's June 2026 guidance says children under seven should not have glycerol-containing slush drinks. Children under ten should have no more than one 350 ml portion a day; free refills are discouraged.

Is E422 safe?

UK guidance issued in June 2026 gives age and portion restrictions for glycerol-containing slush drinks. UK approved-additives and glycerol guidance (2026).

A label identifies the ingredient but usually not its concentration. Calculating daily intake requires the amount in the food and the quantities eaten.

Authorization and conditions of use

The Great Britain food additive register lists E422 as Glycerol. This is an entry subject to its stated conditions, not unrestricted permission for every food. The record links to the applicable authorization terms. For an EU product, use the European Commission food additive database to check the relevant food category and limits. Other countries may use different names or rules.
